In praise of an early start

One of the interesting things which was said about Steve Jobs was that he wanted products to be perfect before launching them.  A worthy sentiment no doubt, but it made me realise that I have taken a rather different approach.  I have favoured starting small and using an iterative approach to developing a business.  This approach has the following advantages:

  • Get to market quickly
  • Low start up costs
  • Learn quickly from (the inevitable) mistakes
Trying to get things perfect, not only costs more money, but is also a perfect excuse for inaction.  My regret looking back is not starting earlier.  All projects take a length of time to complete and the sooner you start, the sooner you will reach your destination, or realise that the project is not going to work.
